Alleged 217 kmph driver on Mayo's N17 ‘got caught up in the moment’

A Lamborghini driver allegedly caught driving at 217 kmph on a stretch of the N17 in Mayo told the garda who arrested him: "I’m sorry. I got caught up in the moment".

James Wall, with an address at Sullom New Road, Little London, Talley, U.K., appeared before Judge Fiona Lydon at Castlebar District Court on a charge of dangerous driving at Castlegar, Claremorris, on Saturday last.

Wall was a participant in the 2023 Cannonball charity run.

Evidence of arrest, charge and caution was given in court by Garda John Barrett of the Mayo Roads Policing Unit.

Garda Barrett gave evidence that after arresting the accused for dangerous and cautioning him, he apologised and made the aforementioned comment.

Garda Barrett said he brought the accused to Claremorris Garda Station, where he made no reply after caution

The accused was released after payment of €500 bail monies.

Mr. Gary Mulchrone, solicitor, acting on behalf of a Cork legal firm, said the accused had travelled from the U.K. for the hearing.

There was no application for legal aid.

Judge Lydon set October 17 as the date for the full trial hearing.
