Flooding problems in Mayo after intense rainfall

The community of Glenisland, near Castlebar, has been hit hard by flooding following a period of intense rainfall today.

A section of the main road at the location between Castlebar and Bangor Erris is under heavy water, posing a danger to traffic.

Photographs from the spot have been posted to social media.

One shows a sheep climbing onto the wall of the local cemetery to escape the rising water.

Divisions are on place via the R311 Castlebar to Newport Road and R317 Newport to Beltra Road.

Motorists have been urged to exercise caution.

Flooding issues have also been reported along the old road between Castlebar and Turlough.

A Status Orange rain alert for the county was lifted at 5 p.m.
