Casualty airlifted to hospital from remote Mayo beach

A casualty has been airlifted from Glosh Beach, near the village of Aughleam in Belmullet, to Sligo University Hospital.

A major search operation ended on a successful note late last Saturday night when a person reported missing was located.

The search, involving Rescue 118, An Garda Siochána, and Ballyglass Coast Guard, got underway at Glosh Beach close to where the person's car was located.

The coast guard deployed two search teams along the shoreline while R118 conducted their search from the air with the use of their Flir camera and NGV's.

Shortly after the person's phone was found, reports had been confirmed that the missing person located -but in need of medical attention.

R118 landed on the beach close to where the casualty was located.

The paramedic on board carried out a medical assessment on the casualty and the decision was made to airlift the casualty and take him to Sligo hospital for further medical treatment.

All teams were stood down at 23.40 p.m.

A spokesperson for Ballyglass Coast Guard Unit stated: "We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

"Well done to all involved in the incident, thankfully it was the result we all hoped for."
