Mayo man John Geraghty takes on dual marathon task to help the homeless

Kilmeena's own John Geraghty is lacing up his running shoes for an extraordinary feat this October as he prepares to conquer not one, but two marathons on opposite sides of the globe.

With his eyes set on the Chicago and Dublin Marathons, John's ambitious mission is driven by a profound desire to make a difference in the lives of those facing homelessness.

A passionate runner, John Geraghty has dedicated himself to raising vital funds for charities through a series of incredible adventures, from running to cycling and climbing.

His upcoming races in Chicago and Dublin will mark his 21st and 22nd marathons, a remarkable testament to his commitment to the causes he holds dear.

When asked about his motivation, John commented: "Listening to the depressing figures and the number of families experiencing homelessness regularly on the news has motivated me to fundraise in the hope of playing my part. It's heart-wrenching to witness the struggles of those less fortunate, and I believe that together, we can make a difference."

"We're immensely proud of John's dedication and determination," said Monica McElhinney Community Fundraiser with Focus Ireland.

"His commitment to our cause is inspiring, and we're grateful for his support. Every donation he raises will help us make a positive impact in the lives of those facing homelessness."

John's efforts will benefit Focus Ireland, a leading organization dedicated to combating homelessness and supporting individuals and families in need.

Every step he takes in both marathons will be a stride towards providing hope, and a brighter future for those who need it most.

Latest figures show there currently 83 people in emergency accommodation in Mayo and Roscommon and 212 children in the West region (Mayo, Galway and Roscommon).
