Mayo sees modest increase in dairy cow numbers amid nationwide growth
Dairy farming has been on the rise since the removal of milk quotas in 2013, Mayo stands out with a modest increase in its dairy cow population. According to the latest data from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF), Mayo has experienced a relatively small uptick of 2,448 dairy cows over the past decade.
While figures show a modest growth since 2013 in comparison to some other counties in Mayo but it is indicative of the broader trend of expansion in Ireland's dairy industry. Since the removal of milk quotas, every county in the country has witnessed an increase in the number of dairy cows, contributing to a nationwide surge of 456,139 dairy cows.
The county with the most significant growth in its dairy herd is Cork, boasting an 84,811 additional cows during the same period. Cork now leads the pack with a staggering 400,461 dairy cows, more than double the count in any other county.
