Mayo TD encourages government to accelerate plans to host Euro 2028

Fine Gael spokesperson on Tourism and Sport Alan Dillon has called on the government to accelerate its plans to host major international events in light of recent developments.

Deputy Dillon spoke upon news of Ireland and UK being the sole bid to host Euro 2028. The former GAA star turned politician stated, "Turkey’s official withdrawal from the bid to host the Euros, coupled with the joint bid of Ireland and the UK, presents a unique opportunity for our nations to showcase their capabilities on the global stage."

Deputy Dillon stated, “It is now imperative that we accelerate our government's plans to ensure we are fully prepared to host this major event and others in the future.”

Deputy Dillon emphasised the numerous benefits hosting such events would bring to both countries, including boosting tourism, promoting economic growth, and enhancing our international reputation.

He also highlighted the chance for Ireland and the UK to demonstrate their unity and ability to collaborate on the global stage. “Our nations have a rich history in sports and a proven track record of hosting successful events. By accelerating our efforts, we can not only create an unforgettable experience for fans and athletes but also stimulate economic growth in various sectors,” Deputy Dillon added.

Deputy Dillon stressed, “I am calling on the government to work closely with sports organisations, local communities, and relevant stakeholders to expedite our preparations. Let us seize this moment to showcase our nations’ hospitality and passion for sports,” Dillon concluded.

The UK and Ireland bid has not been without controversy as UEFA and its members were outraged at the fiasco during the EURO 2020 Final held in Wembley Stadium.

Ireland will have only one host venue in Dublin, while Northern Ireland will have to develop Windsor Park or a mooted Casement Park renovation to host games in Belfast.
