Mayo goalkeeper earns rave reviews on clean sheet debut for Wrexham

Belcarra native, Luke McNicholas started for the first time last night in Wrexham's 3-0 EFL Trophy win against Crewe Alexandra.

The former Sligo Rovers shot-stopper made the move to League Two side Wrexham in August on a short-term loan from the Bit O’Red.

A youth career at Manulla F.C., McNicholas has been helped by the retirement of former England and Manchester United keeper Ben Foster.

He hung up his gloves in September and lessened competition for a starting berth. McNicholas will be hoping to earn more chances to impress his manager, Phil Parkinson.

Last night’s clean sheet in a comprehensive 3-0 win for the north Wales side will have done no harm in helping McNicholas earn a permanent move to the ambitious club owned by Hollywood royalty, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny.

Wrexham fans went to twitter to lavish praise on the young keeper.

“Must be said McNicholas has had a fantastic debut 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻”

“Another clean sheet 👏. Some solid displays out there. Great debut for McNicholas.”

“🧤 McNicholas - Brilliant, so composed”
