Balla Railway Station has been closed to passengers since 1963.

Back to Iarnród Éireann to reopen central Mayo train station

THE ball is being thrown back into the Iarnród Éireann court to deliver on the reopening of Balla Train Station.

The rail company had suggested to Mayo County Council that it should prepare a business plan for its reopening. Commented Councillor Cyril Burke: “Talk about passing the ball, but that is passing to someone who isn't on the team at all.”

Sending the ball back, he asked the council to write to Iarnród Éireann and ask how could they expect the council to come up with such a business plan.

The rail company had the figures, he said, and were best placed to decide if it was feasible. The council would support them in the opening but it had to come from Iarnród Éireann.

Councillor Burke welcomed the proposed new late evening rail service from Dublin to Mayo, adding that a stop in Balla would be a huge addition.
