Breaffy beat neighbours Mitchels to reach Mayo senior football final

Breaffy won the battle the neighbours when they defeated Castlebar Mitchels by two points (1-9 to 0-10) in the Connacht Gold Mayo Senior Football Championship semi-final in Charlestown.

The all-important goal arrived in the fifth minute of the second half, putting Breaffy in what looked like a commanding five-point lead (1-6 to 0-4).

Initiated by a burst from Aidan O'Shea on the left-hand side, the move continued through Rory Martyn who set Davitt Neary up for a palmed effort that Rory Byrne got a hand too, but the Mitchels 'keeper couldn't prevent Neary from from latching on to the loose ball and blasting it to the back of the net.

A misfiring Mitchels – they kicked eight wides in the first half – suddenly found their rhythm in front of the posts and they were level just seven minutes later, Bob Tuohy scoring the point (a beauty from distance) that made it a tied game at 1-6 to 0-9.

However, Breaffy – who enjoyed a 0-6 to 0-3 advantage at the break after showing more composure off less possession than their opponents – shored it up thereafter and restricted their opponents to just one more point while adding three of their own to secure a famous win and a place in this year's final, where they will face either Knockmore or Ballina Stephenites.

Dropping out the senior grade are The Neale, who were defeated by Ballyhaunis in the relegation final. It finished 1-10 to 1-7 in Garrymore.

The Egan Jewellers Intermediate Football Championship relegation final was played as well and after struggling all season, Kiltimagh pulled a big performance out of the bag to win by the minimum against Bonniconlon. The final result was Kiltimagh 0-9, Bonniconlon 0-8.

The TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Junior A Football Championship finalists were determined as well, with Lahardane defeating Eastern Gaels by three (1-12 to 1-9), while Shrule/Glencorrib won a low-scoring encounter against an injury hit Cill Chomáin, eking out a 0-5 to 0-3 victory.
