Mayo LGFA club winners crowned on busy day in Bekan

The winners of the Mayo LGFA senior, intermediate and junior club championships were crowned on a busy day at the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, Bekan.

At senior level, Knockmore reclaimed the title they won two years ago but surrendered last year to Burrishoole as they held on to inflict a 2-8 to 0-12 defeat on a gallant Westport team.

The north Mayo team appeared to be heading for a relatively easy victory at half-time thanks to a commanding 2-6 to 0-3 lead, and they still held that nine-point advantage (2-7 to 0-4) 10 minutes into the second half.

However, in a spirited turnaround, Westport outscored Knockmore by 0-8 to 0-1 in the remaining 20-plus minutes, and all their stunning comeback lacked was a goal.

Time ran out on the resurgence and Knockmore's excellent first half – with goals from Shauna Howley (penalty) and Lara Sweeney – provided the solid foundation on which they claimed back the title with two points to spare (2-8 to 0-10).

The intermediate final between MacHale Rovers and Moy Davitts followed a remarkably similar pattern to the senior.

MacHale Rovers appeared to be very much in control at half-time with a seven-point lead (2-3 to 0-2), and five minutes into the second half it got even better as the advantage had jumped to 10 with a third goal for the leaders.

However, Moy Davitts staged a stirring comeback and by full-time just four points separated the teams (3-5 to 2-4). So near but yet so far for Moy Davitts, who could only watch on as MacHale Rovers lifted the trophy.

There was less drama in the junior A final as Claremorris proved too strong for St. Brigid's, winning on a scoreline of 2-16 to 0-4 in a game that got the day's action under way in Bekan.
