Issue of townland signposts being removed in Mayo raised again
SIGNPOSTS with village names have been removed around the Castlebar and Westport areas...to be replaced by road numbers.
It has happened in respect of more than 10 townlands out the Westport Road in Castlebar over the past few weeks, Councillor Ger Deere told a meeting of Mayo County Council.
He asked who had decided this - the council or TII.
He understood the use of numbers with GPS but to take away the identity of an area and replace a sign with numbers was 'bureaucracy gone mad'. And there was a cost also.
Councillor Deere requested whoever took them to put them back.
His area colleague Councillor Michael Kilcoyne said the municipal district didn't know who had taken the signs away, so perhaps the chief executive might tell them.
If not they should be reporting the matter of 'public property disappearing' to the police.
Signs has also disappeared in the Westport area, local Councillor Brendan Mulroy added, and it is causing problems for people.
Director of services Tom Gilligan said he would have to come back to members on the issue.
He wasn't aware of an instruction to remove signs.
