Mayo camogie club going for glory in Galway
The Castlebar Mitchels senior camogie team will play their first ever Galway county final on Sunday (October 22) when they take on Adrahan in the Junior B 12-a-side decider in Kilconieron. The game will throw in at 11.45 a.m.
Kilconieron provided the opposition in Mitchels' semi-final last Sunday, a competitive and entertaining game played in perfect conditions.
Castlebar's 1-15 to 1-5 victory was built on a strong first half which saw them lead by seven points at half-time. Kilconeiron mounted a spirited fight back in the second half and quickly pulled a goal back but the response from Mitchels was clinical, with a superbly worked goal scored by Katylin McNally mere minutes later to kill off any hope of a revival.
Castlebar closed out the game will panache and went on to win by 10 points. Niamh Kennedy topped the scoring charts with six points from fees and from play, while captain Brona Joyce scored four from play.
Other scorers were Ava Dooley (two points), Chiara Kennedy (two points) and Clodagh Quinn (one point), not forgetting goal-scorer Niamh Kennedy.
In goal, Fiona Duffy had a excellent game and made a number of crucial stops. The back four of Shauna Peoples, Megan Deely, Aoife Quinn and Cuileann Burke were very solid and dealt really well with the Kilconeiron threat. Up front, the pace of Suzanne Touhy and Fiona Quinn was a constant threat, while substitutes Rachel Healy and Ashling Tracey made big impacts when they came off the bench.
Support for the Mitchels team in Sunday's final would be greatly appreciated.
