Draft climate action plan for Mayo to go on public display

A DRAFT climate action plan for Mayo is to go on public display. Submissions will be invited when the draft is published.

There has been extensive stakeholder engagement in the pre-draft phase of what is the first ever climate action plan for the county, with more than 500 community submissions alone received.

Climate action officer Laura Dixon told county council members in an update that 92% of respondents indicated that they are worried about climate change. Conditions for future generations are the biggest worry.

Improved sustainable travel options is what people are most looking forward to.

She made the point that they are not demanding change from people but helping them to improve quality of life, with lots of good work already being done in the county. For example, Mayo has the highest number of farmers in the ACRES scheme.

The point was made by Councillor Gerry Murray that substantial European funding is available for low carbon transport projects but the northwest region hasn't been nominated by government and therefore we can't even apply for it.
