Green light for upgrade of Mayo key electricity network

EirGrid has welcomed the decision by An Bord Pleanála to grant approval for the proposed North Connacht 110kV Project, following an extensive period of consultation and engagement with communities and stakeholders in the project area.

The North Connacht 110 kV Project will create a new circuit in the electricity transmission network from Moy Substation in Ballina, to Tonroe Substation in Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon.

The project will also include the upgrade and extension work to Moy and Tonroe substations and an upgrade of the existing 110 kV overhead line between Tonroe and Flagford substations in County Roscommon.

The location of the line will not change.

This planning decision is the latest milestone achieved by the project team and marks a significant step forward for Ireland’s electricity grid operator in the transition to a low carbon electricity grid.

This key infrastructure project will connect new renewable generation to help meet our Climate Action Plan targets, while connecting new demands for electricity to support economic growth and will reinforce the strength of the transmission network in the north Connacht region.

At present, a large amount of renewable electricity is generated in the north Connacht region and more is planned over the coming years. EirGrid needs to improve the electricity network in the region so it can facilitate the future expected flow of power.

Explaining the key nature of the project and its delivery, EirGrid’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, Michael Mahon said: “The Government’s Climate Action Plan sets out the target to achieve up to 80% of electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and this project is an important step in reaching this target.

"When delivered it will mean a strengthened network that can support a growing economy and population.”

Mr. Mahon also acknowledged the role of local communities in the area of the development and said EirGrid is committed to ongoing engagement through an established community forum and continued dialogue.

“We will continue to liaise with communities and would like to thank them and all stakeholders in both Mayo and Roscommon who continue to engage with the project team. Without their input at each stage of this project we would not be able to reach this point.”
