Celebrating 25 years of cinema at Mayo Movie World
MAYO Movie World, the seven-screen cinema at Mayo Leisure Point in Castlebar, is celebrating its silver jubilee.
The facility is not just an attraction for film buffs, but it caters for a vide variety of different groups - senior citizens, mother and baby groups, as well as sensory screenings and business conferences.
There are four full-time and 10 part-time staff in the cinema, and Cora Mulroy, of Mayo Movie World, gave The Connaught Telegraph the background on the facility.
She said: “When Mayo Movie World opened in late 1998 we had four cinema screens and a few years later we added on three more screens. My late father, Joe Mulroy, had built the cinema on the grounds of the Bacon Factory, and with the help of Pat Concannon, manager, Mayo Movie World has gone from strength to strength since it opened.
“The benefit of having seven screens is great as we can show more movies and we can show them longer if they are doing very well. The movies industry is very fast, every week there are new movies, maybe three of four, and the fact we have seven screens allows us to hang on to them a bit longer.
“We were very lucky that during Covid we were able to move the indoor screens to outdoor drive-in movies, offering classic and new release movies in a safe environment with freshly made popcorn, snack and drinks also delivered to the customer’s car.”
As well as daily screenings of new releases, Mayo Movie World also offer Kids Club every Saturday and Sunday mornings and evenings during the week - reduced price movies for parents and children, with a special treat tray.
