Comhaltas honours Mayo's Bríd O'Connell

SWINFORD'S Bríd O’Connell has been presented with the Gradam na hÉigse award, one of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann’s highest honours.

The Gradam was awarded in appreciation of her scholarship, vision and service to Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and the Westport native's promotion of Ireland’s cultural tradition.

The award was presented on behalf of CCÉ by two of Swinford’s talented young musicians, Ríona Foote and Seán Healy. Flowers and a card were presented by Marianne McAleer and Antoinette Peyton. Breege Gleeson, national youth officer, CCÉ, and Minister of State Dara Calleary were also among the speakers.

The celebration in the Gateway Hotel was hosted by Michael Davitt CCÉ, and Bríd was joined by family, friends, members of the Ardchomhairle CCÉ, neighbouring CCÉ branches and Connacht Council.

The evening opened with a very interesting and entertaining presentation by Marian Egan and Joe Byrne followed by lots of lovely tunes.

Bríd is also to be honoured at next Friday's (November 17) Mayo People of the Year Awards in recognition of her work over the past 40 years as the driving force behind the Siamsa Sráide festival in Swinford.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2024 is due to the foresight, dedication and leadership of Bríd, who is also involved in other local groups and charities.
