Work completed on addressing funeral issue outside Mayo church

Work has been completed on lowering a step on a section of the footpath at Chapel Street to facilitate the smoother transfer of coffins from an undertaker’s hearse to the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

The issue had been raised on several occasions by local Councillor Ger Deere.

He said the step directly opposite the church entrance was a hindrance to bereaved families carrying the coffins of loved ones from the roadway to the church entrance.

Councillor Deere said there was a danger of somebody tripping on the step and he had witnessed a number of incidents which alerted him to the need for urgent action.

He paid tribute to the Castlebar Municipal District for carrying out a very professional job at the location.

"It is now a much safer situation for everybody attending funerals and particularly so for bereaved families crossing from the roadway to the church," he added.
