First ever Oireachtas hearing on silent killer sepsis

THE Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health will make history this Wednesday with the first ever hearing on sepsis.

This silent killer claims almost 3,000 lives every year in Ireland.

Representation at the hearing will include the Irish Sepsis Foundation, End Sepsis and Lil Red's Legacy Sepsis Awareness Campaign.

End Sepsis: The Rory Staunton Foundation was founded by Mayo native Ciaran Staunton, from Louisburgh, and his wife Orlaith, who hails from Louth, to improve standards in medical care, raise awareness among the public and save lives following the death of their son Rory in the US as a result of sepsis after scraping his arm while playing basketball.

The groups aim to achieve:

Mandatory Sepsis Protocols: Demand these in all hospitals for swift and effective responses.

National Sepsis Awareness Campaign: Spread the word to save lives - awareness is the first step.

Improved Treatment Services for Sepsis: Enhance healthcare services to tackle this deadly condition better.

The hearing will be broadcast live on Oireachtas TV.
