Mayo council meeting adjourns as mark of respect to late colleagues

THE monthly meeting of Mayo County Council adjourned early this afternoon as a mark of respect to two former members who have died.

The funeral of former Fine Gael councillor Eddie Staunton from Crossmolina, who died on Sunday, takes place this evening. He will be laid to rest tomorrow.

The late Michael Joe McGreal, Balla, a former Fianna Fáil representative, who died at the end of October, was also remembered in the adjournment proposed by the cathaoirleach, Councillor Michael Loftus.

Tributes will be paid when the meeting reconvenes on November 30.

Earlier today, Deputy Michael Ring paid tribute to his former council colleague Eddie Staunton, late of Ballynacloy, Crossmolina.

Said Deputy Michael Ring: “I was very sorry to the learn of the passing of Eddie. Eddie was a formidable character.

“He was a Mayo county councillor for a long number of years and he served this role with distinction. He worked hard for his locality and he was a very well respected man.

“I served with Eddie on Mayo County Council and I always found him to be a thorough gentleman.

“I wish to extend my deepest sympathies to Eddie’s wife Margaret, daughters Geraldine and Mairead and his sons Eamon and Brian, grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, brothers, sisters and extended families.”
