Recent history of Gaelic games in Mayo parish detailed in new publication
A new GAA history book – entitled The GAA in Louisburgh: 2012-2022 – tells the story of Louisburgh GAA and LGFA from 2012 to 2022.
Louisburgh GAA club man Tommy Morahan adopted a unique approach to this history of the club. Featuring news items published in the local newspaper The Mayo News along with 450 photographs and excerpts from meeting reports, this is a book that can be picked up for minutes or for hours.
The result is a beautifully presented hard-back book with 450 photographs and an easy-to-read record of the period – perfect for coffee table reading.
The book includes information about following: the All-Ireland LGFA and GAA medals won by the club members; how a local father and son both won All-Ireland minor medals; how Louisburgh native Claire Egan paved the way for Louisburgh LGFA while winning at the highest level; how the offshore island of Clare Island feeds into Louisburgh GAA; the day Jim Gavin, former Dublin team manager, called in to the senior lads’ team; the 21st anniversary of the founding of the LGFA in Louisburgh; how Scór participation helps to deliver dancing and musical success in the community; and how Patrick Durkan, president of Munster Rugby, keeps connected to his Louisburgh roots.
In addition, it looks at players who excelled, including Alan Moran, Emma Needham, Tara Needham, Lisa Needham, Claire Egan, Padraic Prendergast, Jarlath O’Malley, Austin O’Malley, Brendan Heneghan, Alfie Morrison, Joe Staunton, Alan Mayberry, and many more.
The book retail for €30 and is available in local businesses, inlcuding Staunton’s Pharmacy, Corrib Oil, Gala and Books@One in Louisburgh.
