Online petition launched to improve safety along Mayo riverside walkway

A petition has been opened online to improve safety measures along the Greenway river walkway between Castlebar and Turlough.

The petition stated a local family tragically lost a beloved father, son, brother, uncle and friend in July.

It elaborated: "He fell into the river due to a poorly maintained fence along the Greenway river path in Castlebar.

"This devastating incident was not an isolated case; there have been others before him who met similar fates due to inadequate safety measures.

"The current state of fencing along this popular path is alarmingly dangerous.

"It's not just adults who are at risk; children often play nearby and can easily access the river when retrieving balls or simply exploring.

"The lack of proper fencing puts their lives at risk every day.

"In addition to fixing and maintaining all fencing along the river, we also call for improved lighting and functioning cameras along this path.

"These measures would greatly enhance safety for everyone using it - from young kids enjoying a day out to adults walking home after work.

"We urge our local authorities in Castlebar to take immediate action on this matter.

"We cannot afford any more preventable tragedies from happening again because of negligence or oversight.

"Please sign the petition help ensure that everyone can enjoy a safe walk, run or cycle along our beautiful Greenway river path without fear of falling into danger."
