Major clean water boost for south Mayo householders

A Mayo elected representative has welcomed the news the total cost of the Robeen Group Water Scheme (GWS) has been awarded by the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage - with contractors already appointed.

Winters Plant Hire will take on the refurbishment of the Robeen GWS reservoir and the construction of the inter-connector pipeline between Robeen GWS and Lough Carra GWS.

Stated Councillor Patsy O'Brien: "The department initially approved €1.8 million for this project, but the tender report from the consultant engineers revealed that an additional funding allocation of €679,887 was required before the construction contract could be awarded.

"Engineers at Mayo County Council made a request to the department for the additional funding and have been informed that they will receive the full cost of €2.479 million for the project.

"This will greatly benefit the area and will make a big difference in the lives of families who live there.

"Thanks to the engineers of Mayo County Council who are pushing this forward and the hardworking committee for their time and dedication.

"Clean water is the most basic of human rights and I will continue to monitor the progress of this project closely until its completion," he added.
