Concern over dereliction blackspots in Mayo town

Concerns have been raised over housing plans for Castlebar and the delay in acquiring derelict town centre properties.

Councillor Ger Deere highlighted decaying properties along Barrack Bridge.

“Several people have mentioned the condition of the slates on those properties, especially with the recent storms. Something needs to be done,” he said.

Councillor Blackie Gavin is seeking a progress report on the houses the council acquired at Charles Street and where it is planned to build apartments.

Councillor Michael Kilcoyne expressed dismay that it can take 12 months to put a building out to tender.

He was told it is ‘an issue with central housing’.
