Old east Mayo dump pollution risk raised

THE threat of pollution to the Moy from the old town dump in Swinford, via the Spaddagh River, has been raised by a concerned local councillor.

The former dump site is located on the old bog road, outside Swinford, and there has been a lot of flooding at the location, Councillor Neil Cruise told a municipal district meeting.

The Spaddagh, which is a tributary of the Moy, had broken its banks as a result.

It all goes back to the old dump, said Councillor Cruise, and the measures used to top that off.

Mayo County Council were involved in the dump at one time and he asked for an update on what stage it is at now to make sure it doesn't pollute the Spaddagh and onwards the Moy.

Area engineer Conrad Harley said he will speak to the environment section about the dump's decommissioning and where it is at.
