Commitment to developing Mayo railway station into regional freight hub

Elected members of Castlebar Municipal District have incorporated into the new Town Plan its support to developing the local railway station into a regional freight hub.

Councillor Cyril Burke has welcomed the move.

He stated: "We have a well developed station in Castlebar with great access through the Breaffy Road Retail Park to the line.

"At a time when rail is becoming more attractive than road, it is important that Castlebar develops its rail service to its greatest potential.

"Having this included in our Town Plan will help fast-track any application to develop a freight service from Castlebar.

"We are fortunate enough to have a large number of manufacturers in our county that could use this service.

"However, there is now a need to develop a new IDA facility to attract more industries region."
