Electricity connection awaited for lighting system at Mayo level crossing

A LIGHTING system at a railway crossing, scene of a recent accident, is awaiting an electricity connection.

The update on the Garryremond level crossing was provided to Councillor Richard Finn after he requested information on upgrades proposed by Iarnród Éireann in the interests of health and safety.

The crossing - XM190 - is located between Claremorris and Ballyhaunis.

VAMOS DSS lights have been fully installed at the crossing but the power supply hasn't been provided yet by the ESB. They are endeavouring to get an electricity supply to the location.

Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District councillors were also told new trial signage has been installed at XM220 (Cartron level crossing between Claremorris and Balla), along with the following trial locations - XM122 (Behy level crossing between Castlerea and Roscommon) and XM240 (Kilnageer level crossing, located between Manula and Castlebar).

The road markings and gate painting works are scheduled to start shortly at these level crossings.

The success of this trial will determine the roll-out of such works at other level crossings on Iarnrod Éireann’s network.

Councillor Finn said everyone was familiar with the recent incident at Garryremond and approaches have been made by local residents.

One of the biggest problems, he said, is that people are not closing the gates, which should be done for the health and safety of every road user.

On the awaited electricity connection, the councillor said in this day and age there should be an adequate system available to have solar power to operate the lighting.
