Poor road lining and stolen signage a safety issue in south Mayo

POOR road lining and stolen signage is causing a safety issue in south Mayo.

It affects the regional roads, Councillor Damien Ryan told a municipal meeting.

There is a huge problem with signs being robbed and damaged, which carry a huge cost to replace.

Lining is another issue, he said, with lots of it fading.

“These are a huge part of road safety and we need funding to get them up to standard,” he said, requesting that a special funding allocation be sought.

“Signage and road lining are an essential part of road maintenance.”

Head of roads Paul Dolan agreed with his point and said he will be making a case to the department for extra funding.

He also suggested that more funding for local roads maintenance needed to be allocated in the council's budget.
