Mayo councillor overcomes FF selection convention challenge

Outgoing Westport Fianna Fáil Councillor Brendan Mulroy faced a challenge at last night's party convention to select one candidate to run in the Westport electoral area in next June's local elections.

The long-serving representative was opposed by nominee Tommy Duggan and a contest unfolded.

When the votes were counted, Councillor Mulroy was declared the winner by a reported 41 votes to seven.

He stated: "I am absolutely over the moon to have won the FF selection convention last night in Westport and I thanked all those who supported me.

"I am honoured and privileged to have been selected.I look forward to meeting everyone on the canvass for election 2024."
