TD wants funding spent on Christmas lights in Mayo town

A TD has called on Mayo County Council to extend Christmas lights to areas of Westport town that do not have Christmas lights.

Deputy Michael Ring stated: “During my tenure as Minister for Rural and Community Development, I was delighted to allocate €40,000 in 2020 under the Town & Village Accelerated Measures round 3 to purchase and install Christmas lighting in Westport.

“In May 2023, further funding in the amount of €40,000 was allocated to extend the Christmas lights in and around the town of Westport."

Deputy Michael Ring continued: “It is imperative that a bustling tourist town like Westport would have attractive Christmas lights.

"Christmas lights add to the atmosphere and create magic for locals and tourists alike.

“I am very hopeful that with the additional €40,000 allocated in May this year that this funding will be put to good use and extend the lighting to other areas of the town and spread good Christmas cheer.

"A sum of €80,000 is substantial funding and it is very important that it is put to good use.

“Christmas is a very special time of year. The last few years have been difficult for everyone and it important that a Christmas atmosphere is created in the town for locals and visitors.

"I am looking forward to seeing the Christmas lights being extended through the town."
