Top Mayo GAA club strikes gold at Croke Park

Castlebar Mitchels GAA Cub has received a gold medal award from the GAA’s Joe McDonagh Foundation.

The foundation supports clubs with the promotion and development of the Irish language which was established by the GAA and Glór na nGael in Joe’s memory.

The support is provided by Glór na nGael and the Gaelic Athletic Association to GAA clubs wishing to further the Irish Language in their community.

Mitchels PRO, Michael Baynes, said this is a great honour for the club and is a reflection of the dedication and commitment given by everyone who played their part for almost 12 months of the award process.

Irish officer, Padraic MacEoin, said that the award is an award for the whole community and wider.

“Everyone in our club took part, but we had to reach further than that by liaising and working with many community groups in Castlebar and across Mayo.

"No one said no to us. This award would not have been possible with the help of us these people. It was true community spirit.”

There are over 2,200 GAA clubs across the 32 counties with just six others outside of Castlebar Mitchels recipients of a gold medal, three of those in the Gaeltacht.

Members of Castlebar Mitchels were at Croke Park today where they were presented with their medal.

Bonn Óir do na Mistéalaigh

Bhí áthas an domhain ar na Mistéalaigh Caisleán an Bharraigh C.L.G. leis an nuacht go bhuamar an bonn óir ó Fhondúireacht Sheosaimh Mhic Dhonncha/Glór na nGael 2023-2025. Bunaíodh an Fhondúireacht I gcuimhne don Iar-Uachtaráin i bpairtíócht idir C.L.G. agus Glór na nGael. Tugann sé tacaíocht do chlubanna an teanga agus cultúr Gaelach a chur chun cinn ar na páirceanna imeartha agus lasmuigh.

Dúirt ár PRO, Mícheál Mac Giolla Bháin gur onóir iontach é seo don chlub agus go n-aithníónn sé an dúthracht agus ceangaltas a bhí ag na daoine go léir a ghlac páirt chun an gradam a bhuadh.

Dúirt Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Pádraic Mac Eoin, gur duais don phobal go léir an gradam seo. ‘’D’oibrigh a lán daoine sa chlub chun é seo a bhaint amach, ach bhí orainn ceangailt a dhéanamh len a lán grúpaí sa chomhphobal i gCaisleán an Bharraigh agus áiteanna eile sa chondae. Bhí gach duine acu dearfach agus, gan iad, ní bheimis abálta an bua seo a fháil. Is sampla iontach é seo de spioraid láidir an chomhphobail. ‘Ní neart go cur le chéile.’ ‘’

Tá níos mó ná 2,200 clubanna C.L.G. sa tír, agus níl ach 6 bonn óir tugtha amach i mbliain, 3 acu sa Ghaeltacht. Léiríonn é seo an éacht iontach atá tuillte againn. Beidh grúpa baill ó na Mistéalaigh ag taisteal inniu, 1ú Nollag, go Páirc an Chrócaigh don bhronnadh.
