Major fundraiser launched in south Mayo parish to aid pitch project

A LARGE and enthusiastic crowd attended the launch by Hollymount Community Development of their upcoming lip sync fundraiser in Hollymount Hall.

With the support of headline sponsors SuperValu, Claremorris, and Supermac’s, Ballinrobe and Ballindine, the big event will take place in the McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, on Saturday, February 3.

The initiative will raise funds for much-needed development and improvements to the Hollymount GAA pitch.

The official launch was designed to provide the community and the wider public with information about the fundraiser and the lip sync battle itself.

Committee chairman Noel Connelly gave a presentation about the work done to date on drainage, site clearance and dressing room upgrades, and outlined the ambitious proposals to add an astroturf pitch, a floodlit walkway and an all-weather training pitch.

When complete, the village will boast a top-class sporting facility for use by Hollymount-Carramore GAA Club, Hollymount LGFA and the wider community.

Secretary Eimear Flannery outlined what a lip sync battle involves and the various opportunities for fundraising on the night and in the lead up to it.

Local and national businesses are being asked to take an ad in the programme or to sponsor an individual act. The 12 acts who will perform on the night have already started rehearsals and the talent on show is incredible!

The committee has put together a schedule of all the fundraisers happening over the next couple of months.

As well as supermarket, mart and street collections, with a social barn dance on November 26, Santa comes to Hollymount on Sunday, December 10, a colour run, a bed push, shave or dye, and a two-venue table quiz in An Foidín Meara and Finnerty’s on Friday, December 29. Keep an eye on social media and in local press for details of these and other planned events.

There will also be a monster raffle running from now until February 3, with some amazing prizes to be won on the night.

Local Councillors Patsy O’Brien, Tom Connolly, Michael Burke and Damien Ryan were on hand to pledge their support, and the committee were delighted to announce that they have chosen Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation as their charity partner.

Martina Jennings, CEO, spoke about the fantastic work done by the hospice and outlined the importance of charitable donations to enable this work to continue.

The evening ended with a cup of tea and lots of chat about the hard work and opportunities that lie ahead for this ambitious group.
