Funding sought for safety works along Mayo greenway route

Funding is being sought to carry out repair works to fencing on the urban section of the Turlough to Castlebar greenway.

The news has been confirmed to elected members of Castlebar Municipal District.

Councillor Blackie Gavin has submitted a motion for the December meeting of the authority asking that an application be made to the National Transport Authority for funding to replace the old fence along the greenway to Turlough, from the start of the town park in Castlebar to the new bridge at the back of the driving range on the N5."

A tragedy occurred at the location early this year and there have been growing concerns over the safety of the route due to inadequate fencing.

Members of the public opened an online petition calling for a urgent action on the matter.

Meanwhile, adjoining works are ongoing on the path connection between the Greenway and Turlough Village.

The works consist of stone facing a precast wall and accommodation works for as landowner.
