Mayo mart hosting special organic and fatstock sales

A SPECIAL organic and fatstock sale is taking place at Balla Mart next Saturday, December 9.

The mart is holding the organic sale in response to enquiries from organic farmers.

A special fatstock sale on the same day will feature for strong cattle - bullocks, heifers and dry cows, with booking this Wednesday on 0818 301401 from 9.30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There was a fairly big sale at the mart for the time of year last Saturday, with over 700 cattle. Stores saw good buying, with farmers busy, and there were a number of northern buyers in all three rings buying strong cattle - bullocks, heifers and cows - for export to the North, and this had a big impact, keeping up the trade.

A CHX bullock weighing 730kg made €2,110 for the North while the Irish factories are buying the AAX and one 815kg made €2,240. A lighter AAX weighing 660kg made €2,000.

BBX breeding type heifers got a good price. One Belgian Blue born October '22 and weighing 415kg made €1,900. Another smashing LMX heifer born April '23, 255kg, sold for €1,170.

A 845kg BBX dry cow made €2,590. In the springers a farmer from Claremorris had a SIX springer that sold for €2,260.

Weanling are now selling on Saturdays.
