Essential upgrades at Mayo island's water treatment plant confirmed

A Mayo TD is deeply concerned about the dire situation currently faced by the people of Clare Island in regard to their water supply and has demanded immediate attention and action.

Deputy Alan Dillon shared the Clare Island community concerns, stating: “The people of Clare Island have endured an incredibly challenging period due to the recent boil water notices and intermittent water supply disruptions. This has not only impacted their daily lives but also raised significant health and safety concerns for residents and visitors alike. It is imperative that we address these issues with the utmost urgency.”

Uisce Éireann have now confirmed to Deputy Dillon that the proposed upgrades to Clare Island's water treatment plant for enhancing water quality include the introduction of a package UV unit to guard against contaminants like cryptosporidium, the replacement of the granular activated carbon layer with six cartridges for improved filtration, and investigations into new water sources higher up the mountain to secure consistent and clean water supply.

Stated Deputy Dillon: “The importance of these upgrades cannot be overstated. They are not just projects; they are lifelines for Clare Island residents and visitors. They signify a commitment to a future where clean and reliable water is a given, not a luxury.

“I want to assure the people of Clare Island that I am personally invested in ensuring these upgrades are executed swiftly and effectively.

“Uisce Éireann are currently undertaking detailed design for a possible future project in response to the difficulties experienced by residents on the island this year and I will continue to hold them to account to fulfil this commitment.”
