Death of Mayo D-Day heroine Maureen Sweeney
THE death has occurred of Mayo D-Day heroine Maureen Sweeney, in her 101st year.
Maureen earned global acclaim for her weather reports from north Mayo, which saw the Normandy landings of World War II postponed by 24 hours due to a storm.
Maureen was just 21 years old when she took the readings at the weather station in Blacksod in June 1944 that saw the mission delayed, saving many thousands of lives and ultimately securing an Allied victory.
Two years ago she received a medal from the US House of Representatives in recognition of the role she played in changing the course of world history.
Maureen (née Flavin), Blacksod, Belmullet, and formerly of Knockanure, Listowel, Co. Kerry, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, at the Sonas Tí Aire Nursing Home in Belmullet.
She lived in Blacksod Lighthouse with husband Ted from the 1940s until the late '70s and the family's association with the lighthouse continues until this day.
Maureen was predeceased by her husband Ted, grandson David, sister Teresa Kennelly, recently deceased daughter-in-law Margaret, niece Mary and recently deceased nephew Mike Kennelly.
She was beloved mother of Ted, Gerry, Vincent and Emer and will also be sadly missed by daughters-in-law Rita and Doreen, son-in-law Gerhard Schlueter (Albany, New York), grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, the staff of the Sonas Tí Aire Nursing Home, neighbours and many friends.
Reposing is at McDonnell’s Funeral Home, Belmullet, on Thursday evening from 5 until 7 p.m. with funeral arriving at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Aughleam, at 8.30 p.m. Funeral Mass on Friday at 12 noon, followed by burial in Faulmore Cemetery.
