Lough Lannagh confirmed as second most popular visitor hotspot in Mayo

A CONTRACTOR has been appointed to carry out repair works on the Lough Lannagh pedestrian bridge.

Local engineering firm M.F. Hopkins has commenced operations on restoring the safety railings which had become damaged by wear and tear over the years.

The issue has been a bone of contention for a number of months with some local elected representatives consistently raising concerns.

Now Councillor Blackie Gavin has posted an image on his Facebook page showing work underway.

"I am delighted the matter is finally being addressed as it was undermining the image of the amenity."

He expressed delight with recent tourism figures by Mayo County Council which showed that Lough Lannagh had 101,024 visitors up to the end of November this year, making it the second most popular visitor hotspot in the county behind the Great Western Greenway with 108,821 visitors.

"That's wonderful news for the county town," he added.
