Death of renowned retired Mayo journalist Michael Finlan

THE death has occurred of Michael, better known as Mick, Finlan, a former west of Ireland correspondent for the Irish Times who began his journalistic career in the Western People.

A native of Ballina but resident in Oranmore, Galway, for many years, Mick passed away in University College Hospital Galway.

He was a great friend and colleague of his fellow Mayo born journalistic colleague, the late John Healy, with whom he worked in the Western People and later the Irish Times.

In an online tribute to Mr. Finlan, Tommie Gorman, retired Northern editor of RTÉ, described his life as long and accomplished.

Tommie went on to describe Mr. Finlan as 'a beautiful writer'.

Mick Finlan is survived by his wife Marie, daughter Mary Rose, sons Michael and James and their partners Norbert, Anne and Rocio, granddaughter Joyce, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Remains will repose at Aras Naofa (H91 YV52), within the grounds of the Church of St. Oliver Plunkett, Renmore, this evening (Thursday) from 5 p.m. with removal at 6.30 p.m to the Good Shepherd Church, Cumasú Centre, Doughiska Road.

Following Requiem Mass at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Friday), Mick will be laid to rest in Rinville Cemetery, Oranmore.
