Grant reduction looms for Mayo drivers switching to electric motoring

Leading EV charger company ePower is raising awareness about a 50% cut in the maximum amount available in a popular grant scheme that’s set to take effect from New Year’s Day.

The Irish company, which supplies and installs chargers for domestic, commercial and public customers, is highlighting the change at the end of a year that saw significant numbers of drivers making the switch away from petrol and diesel vehicles.

According to the CSO, there was a 46% jump in the number of EV cars licensed between January and November of this year compared to last year.

As the new year approaches, ePower is reminding consumers who might be thinking of making the change that they could qualify for greater grant support on the purchase and installation of a home charger if they apply before December 31.

The Electric Vehicle Home Charger Grant, which is administered by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) is currently worth up to €600. For applications made from January 1, this will be reduced to a maximum of €300.

CEO of ePower, John O’Keeffe, says the grant has been really successful and for drivers considering making the switch in 2024, it’s a good idea to act now.

He explained: “This is a very expensive time of year so if people are already thinking they’ll give electric vehicles a go in 2024, it’s worth making the application and saving yourself up to €300. The grant will give you six months to complete the installation. The government’s range of grant schemes to help people change to EVs have been really popular.”

Full details of the grant application process are on the SEAI website and further information is also available from ePower.
