Glenisland’s natural beauty is simply stunning

SOME years ago the national school in Glenisland was closed; the village lost its garda barracks some years back; the village no longer has its own curate and Fr. Brennan, Islandeady, celebrates weekly Mass in Glenisland.

Like many villages in rural Ireland, Glenisland has suffered many hammer blows.

The village is certainly one of the most picturesque areas in County Mayo and its residents are proud of the many people from the area who have made a big name for themselves at home and abroad.

Those people have never lost their love for their native place. My great-grandmother, Bridget Philbin, was born in Kilhale, Glenisland, a hardy lady by all accounts.

Beltra lake, close to Glenisland village, is one of the best known fisheries in Ireland.

Glenisland has a number of attractions for visitors to Mayo, most of all its natural beauty. I am surprised Bórd Fáilte appears to have ignored it over the years.

Stephen Garvey, Castle Street, Castlebar, bandleader and church organist, regularly visited Glenisland as his grandparents came from the area.

I am sure Stephen would be pleased with the fact that recorded music recitals are now held in the former national school.
