Appeal over Mayo bridge dating back to General Humbert's 1798 invasion

An elected representative has pushed for council intervention in addressing the state of specific road, notably one in the Ardagh/Crossmolina area with historical significance.

Councillor Seamus Weir called on Mayo County Council to take over the road and bridge near Deel Castle and along Deel Bridge, north of Lough Conn.

“A piece of a road, a council road, has fallen off the council plans as incomplete council projects have left sections in disrepair.

“The council came to do a job and didn’t do it. I’m calling for a takeover, agreed, costing €70,000 to do the mile and a half road and €60,000 to do a bridge,” he said.

"Specific roads like that should be taken over by the council. It’s a busy road, it’s a specific road, we believe Humbert crossed that bridge on his way to Lahardane and Castlebar in 1798. It’s a significant bridge.”

Estimated costs for upgrading a mile and a half of road and the 700-year-old bridge were presented, showing that a partial upgrade could suffice.
