Belmullet kicks off its 200 year celebrations in style

THE Erris community marked the first day of Belmullet town’s bicentenary year in style with a gala ball in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel on New Year’s Day.

The Erris capital was founded by landlord William Henry Carter in 1824 when he directed engineer and Castlebar native Patrick Knight to lay out a planned town on the isthmus between Broadhaven and Blacksod bays.

A year of celebrations is taking place in Belmullet over the next 12 months to mark its 200 years.

After a hugely successful opening celebration event, the committee of Belmullet 200 has extended thanks to the Padden family and all the team at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel for their support and for providing a beautiful setting and the finest of food and service.

The committee would also like to thank The Camembert Quartet Band, Buck Taylor and Keith McDonald for a night of exceptional entertainment. A special mention of thanks also to Sheila Moffat and the exceptional dancers of the Moffat School of Irish Dance who performed on the night.

A note of thanks to Belmullet 200’s sponsors, in particular to mention Padraig Conroy and Kevin O’Shea for their fundraising on behalf of Belmullet 200 in Chicago in 2023.

A huge thanks also to Monika Regeciova for event photography and Fergus Sweeney and Tom Reilly for videography and Lisa and Colm Monaghan at Go Print.

Finally, a thanks to all who attended and supported this inaugural Belmullet 200 event, which included representatives from across numerous local community organisations and businesses, public representatives, Deputy Rose Conway-Walshe and Councillor Seán Carey, local clergy and community volunteers. Míle buíochas go léir!

Planned and upcoming events for the Belmullet 200 celebrations will continue to be announced on Belmullet 200 social media platforms and in local print media.
