North Mayo youth centre plan adopted

PLANS to extend and use Canal House in Belmullet as a community youth facility have been adopted by local councillors.

The property is located at Pearse Street in the town, with a number of amendments made to the proposal following a public consultation process.

Westport-Belmullet Municipal District cathaoirleach Councillor Sean Carey said it was an excellent facility that will cater for the youth and be a great outlet for them.

Councillor Gerry Coyle seconded the adoption of the planning report, noting the amendments that had been made.

A number of submissions referred to the fact the men's shed were omitted from the project.

However, the council clarified that it was never part of this project and it has always been the intention to provide a men’s shed space at the Seanteic.

Submissions also related to former owner Michael Lavelle, who fought in the civil war.

The council said that an appropriate way to commemorate Michael Lavelle will be considered by the project committee at a later stage.
