Mayo League clinch Connaught title with win over Roscommon

Mayo League showcased their dominance with a 4-1 victory over Roscommon League in the Oscar Traynor inter-provincial final group game this afternoon.

Despite facing a barrage of early opportunities from Roscommon, Mayo managed to capitalise on key moments, taking an unexpected 2-0 lead into half time.

Ben Edeh emerged as a pivotal figure for Mayo, scoring the opening goal after a dazzling run by Jamie Cawley caught the Roscommon's defence napping.

Adam Nugent extended the lead with a precise finish, a clinical strike from the Westport United striker put Mayo in the driving seat.

The second half saw Mayo maintain their dominance, with Jamie Cawley's blistering run and a cool finish from Darren Browne further solidifying their lead. However, a surprising turn came when Roscommon's Calum Andrews found the net, offering a glimmer of hope and reducing the deficit to 3-1.

As the game entered its final stages, Roscommon fought valiantly with Rian Carpenter testing Mayo's goalkeeper, Stefen Hester, with an acrobatic shot. Yet, Mayo's resilience prevailed, and Dylan McKee sealed the victory with a stylish goal in extra time.

Despite an apparent loss of energy in the late stages, Mayo's strategic play and clinical finishing secured their place at the top of the Connaught League table. The win not only guarantees Mayo a home draw in the upcoming quarter-finals but also crowns them as the Connaught champions.
