Chambers welcomes reductions in waiting lists at Mayo University Hospital

WAITING lists at Mayo University Hospital have reduced over the last 12 months.

Local Fianna Fáil Senator Lisa Chambers has welcomed an update from her party colleague, Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly, on the progress made to address waiting lists last year in Mayo University Hospital (MUH).

Senator Chambers said: “I was delighted to receive confirmation from Minister Donnelly that last year saw a 30% reduction in patients waiting for an outpatient appointment and a 63% reduction (1,890 patients) in those waiting over 12 months in MUH.

“I was also pleased to hear those waiting the longest (12 months plus) for an inpatient/day-case procedure fell by 97%.”

She added: “Fianna Fáil in government is committed to tackling hospital waiting lists and identifying ways to improve access to care.

“Thanks to the enormous efforts of our healthcare workers, we have fewer patients waiting longer now than they did a year ago.

“This follows on from a reduction in 2022, which was the first annual decrease in national hospital waiting lists since 2015 and Fianna Fáil is determined that fewer patients again will be waiting at the end of 2024.”
