Odour problem in south Mayo town resolved

AN odour issue on the Knock Road in Claremorris has been resolved.

Local Peace Commissioner Paul Lawless has welcomed a series of works carried out by Uisce Éireann after receiving a number of reports from residents about odours emanating from the sewage system.

Said Mr. Lawless: “The residents on the Knock Road and Claremount area of Claremorris have suffered for many years with odour problems arising from issues with the sewage system in the area. I made many representations to Uisce Éireann and the EPA about this.

“I'm delighted to announce that a range of measures have now been carried out to address the concerns of residents, namely that the pumping station has undergone cleaning and maintenance, sealed manhole lids have been installed and three manholes which were buried during road works have been raised to ensure better access for maintenance.

“In addition, a sewer ventilation column which was removed during roadworks has now been reinstalled, which should permanently resolve the odour issue.”

Mr. Lawless said he was thankful to the Uisce Éireann engineers and will continue to monitor the site alongside residents for any other issues that might arise.
