Snowfall in Mayo leads to dangerous roads and school closures

A combination of ice and snow has led to roads and footpaths across Mayo being very dangerous this morning.

Due to the adverse travelling conditions, many schools - particularly in rural communities - decided to close in the interest of health and safety.

Gardaí have advised people not to travel unless it's absolutely necessary, describing roads as 'treacherous.'

Those who must make journeys are advising to drive slowly and exercise caution.

A number of vehicles have gone off the road at a number of locations.

A Status Yellow snow warning is in place for Mayo with further snowfalls forecast.

People are being asked to keep an eye on vulnerable and elderly neighbours.
