Power outages reported in Mayo ahead of 'nasty' Storm Isha landfalling

Homes and businesses across west Mayo have been left without a power supply ahead of Storm Isha.

The communities of Achill and Westport have already been hit hard ahead of the storm landfalling.

More than 1,200 are without power in Oughterard, Co Galway.

The National Emergency Coordination Group met this morning and warned people in zones affected by the Red Wind Warnings not to travel between 5 and 9 p.m.

Speaking to RTÉ Radio One, Paul Rock, senior assistant fire advisor, said they do not want anyone to die as a result of this storm and described Storm Isha as "particularly nasty."

"Life safety is at the core of what we do.

"We don't want anyone dying as a result of this storm. People should heed the public national advice.

"People should stay away from coastal areas. Cyclists and motorcyclists are especially vulnerable at this time," he stated.

A number of business are closing early due to the situation.

Gardaí are also appealing to road users to be cautious.
