Closing date looms for Mayo clubs to sign up to the 2024 Táin Óg leagues

Mayo GAA clubs are being encouraged to sign up for the 2024 Táin Óg leagues ahead of the closing date next Monday (January 29).

The leagues are developmental hurling competitions operating across Ulster, Connacht (excluding Galway), Longford and Louth, providing much-needed games for clubs at Under 14, Under 16 and Under level.

The Táin Óg League and its senior club team equivalent, the CúChulainn League, provides clubs from within developing hurling counties with a programme of games which may not be possible within their own county due to a lack of clubs.

The principal objectives of the Táin Óg and CúChulainn competitions are to ensure that there is an appropriate programme of games for clubs and players within developing hurling counties. The cross-county/provincial nature of the competition provides clubs and players with the opportunity to play clubs outside of their usual fixtures programme.

The developmental nature of the competition allows teams to field at 11-, 13- or 15-a-side, where necessary, to ensure that clubs have adequate games for those who have smaller numbers given the challenges they face within particular areas.

Applications are now open for the 2024 Táin Óg Under 14 and Under 16 competitions. Clubs are asked to note the following: applications will close at 10 a.m. on Monday, January 29; finalised groupings will be released by mid-February; ensure that one application is submitted by your club by communicating with your club secretary/coaches; Táin Óg games at Under 14 and Under 16 will be played on Monday nights (with additional weekend finals/blitz days); applications for Under 18 Táin Óg and CúChulainn leagues will open in due course to ensure more accurate applications are received; the Under 18 Táin Óg competition will be played across four dates as multi-club blitzes on Sundays; CúChulainn competitions will be played on Wednesday nights, with semi-finals and finals on Saturdays.
