Move to finally eradicate accident black-spot in Mayo town

Plans are in the pipeline to finally address the dangerous junction at Ardboley, Balla.

Councillor Al McDonnell said works will be carried out during the proposed N60 Pollavaddy to Balla Active Travel Scheme.

The scheme consists of 1.2 kilometres of standalone cycleway/walkway along or close to the N60 between the proposed Heathlawn Active Travel facility and the town of Balla.

The cross-section will comprise a hard surface approximately 2.4 metres wide.

It is one of seven sections of a continuous linear cycleway/walkway route connecting Castlebar and Claremorris.

The project is currently at phase two of Transport Infrastructure Ireland’s project management guidelines.

TII rejected a request from Mayo County Council to amend the existing speed limits.

A CPO document is now being prepared which involves seeking planning permission.

Councillor McDonnell welcomed confirmation that the scheme will include works at the Ardboley junction, where a number of traffic accidents have occurred in recent years.
