Mayo celebrate their Nancy Murray Cup victory.

Mayo Camogie warns of 'dire consequences' if senior manager cannot be found

Mayo Camogie has today warned that if they cannot appoint a new manager for their senior team, they will have to withdraw from the upcoming league campaign and this summer’s All-Ireland Premier Junior Camogie Championship.

The organisation has been seeking a manager for their senior side for the past number of months, to no avail. They have exhausted many avenues and are now appealing for anyone with an interest in keeping the game alive in the county to step in and help them.

Mayo’s opening league game is scheduled for February 24 against Tyrone – just weeks away.

Over the past three years, Mayo have enjoyed huge success with their senior side, capturing the Nancy Murray Cup and a Division 4 league title, while they were runners-up in last year’s Nancy Murray Cup final – all of which has led them to competing at the prestigious Premier Junior level. Numbers playing the game in Mayo have grown by 35% in the past three years alone.

The cchairperson of Mayo Camogie, Rebecca Fahy, said: “We are in a dire situation at the moment. Despite extensive efforts, we have not been able to recruit a manager for the Mayo senior camogie team.

“If we cannot do so before the start of the National League, we will have to withdraw from the competition – something nobody involved in camogie in the county wants to see happen.”

Rebecca added: “I cannot stress how a move like this would set the game back in Mayo. We are currently playing at a very high level nationally but having to withdraw from such competitions would set us back a number of years and who knows what the lasting impact might be.

“We are seeking expressions of interest for a manager for our senior side. We’d love to hear from anybody who might be interested at this stage, even if they aren’t from a strictly camogie background.

“We need someone to step in to help us preserve the game for all those girls who give unwavering commitment throughout the year.”

Mayo Camogie has set Friday, February 2, as the deadline for applications. Interested persons can email the Mayo Camogie secretary, Caroline Conway, on secretary.mayo@camogie.ie by that date.
